Most students are in the situation where fund-raising will be required to finance the trip. Fund-raising should be seen as part of the challenge in getting to Southern Africa and can be great fun. Once you have booked your placement you can request our booklet “The A.C.E. Guide to Fun(d)-Raising” which will show you just how much fun it can be. It gives you some great ideas and the basic information to get you started. The Guide will also tell you where we can give you direct support and assistance.

I
started by asking around friends and family for ideas on how to raise
money, and a few people suggested having a big event so that I could
raise a lot of money in one go. I decided to have a fundraising 1980's
themed disco in the local town hall with a bar and a raffle to make
money. I didn't really get to enjoy the night like everyone else did,
because it was so much pressure, and I had to supervise the bar and
make sure everything was running smoothly... but it was all worth it.
When it was over, we counted the takings from ticket sales, the bar and
the raffle, and subtracted all the costs and I ended up making £1200.
Some people had also been very generous and given me donations which
amounted to another £600 on top of my profits from the night!”

To raise money for our African Conservation Experience, we knew we
had to do some fundraising, and we knew we had to something a little
bit different. In the end we decided to do a walk in animal costumes. All
we had left to decide was how many miles we were going to walk and
the places. In the end we decided to walk from Brixham to Newton
Abbot, which is approx 16 miles. We did the walk on November 26th
2004. The people who decided to do the walk was me (lion), Ben Wiggins
(tiger), Lyn Reynolds (pink hippo) and Frankie Jarvis (pink hippo). When
the day of the walk came we were all nervous but very excited we
started the walk at 9:00 at Brixham Town we eventually finished around
5:00 after our long breaks. We got lots of money from people on the way
and we got a lot of encouragement from people in their cars after they
heard that we were walking on the radio. In the end all of us raised
around £700. So it was well worth it!”
